Within Rabobank, Tribe Insurance & Pension, Area Private Lines, Chapter IT, Squad Core responsible for the 'core' of the All-in-one-Policy. A collection of 20+ microservices, running on the Cloud Foundry platform, arranging the interaction between the user (customer and employee) and the insurer (Interpolis). Next to this form of insurance, I was also part of the journey squads that dealt with short-term travel and cancellation insurances, health insurances and life insurance.
My 'housekeeping' task was the maintenance of the Ci/CD process (Azure DevOps pipeline) and the automatic processing of library updates. The pipeline originally consisted of a fixed number of stages. By making these stages dynamic the possibility arose to roll-out the services to multiple environments. A migration from Pivotal Cloud Foundry to the open-source community edition was therefore a no-brainer since both foundations were active at the same time. At a certain moment in time, just a flick of a switch was needed to activate the final target platform.
The services that were built (Java) used a bill of materials (BOM). This contained the version of Spring Boot a.o. as well as the location of the Nexus Repository Manager. With the help of scripts, those 20+ services where updated to the latest version of this BOM, automatically created branches and (by using the Azure DevOps API) work items and pull requests.
By automating the above tasks it became possible to bring new versions to production in a fast and controlled manner. Next to that it gives developer more time to focus on adding new functionality.
